Do Eyelashes Shed and Grow Back Like Hair? Yes And Here's Why Its Totally Normal.
Have you ever looked in the mirror and noticed a few lashes missing, then panicked thinking your extensions are falling out too soon?
Youre not alone many people are surprised to find that eyelashes, just like the hair on your head, go through a natural growth and shedding cycle. In fact, lash shedding is completely normal, whether you wear extensions or not.
The Natural Lash Growth Cycle
Your natural eyelashes follow a three-phase cycle, just like scalp hair:
- Anagen (Growth Phase):
This is when your lash is actively growing. This phase lasts around 3045 days.
- Catagen (Transition Phase):
A short resting period where growth stops, and the follicle begins to shrink. If a lash falls out during this stage, it wont grow back immediately.
- Telogen (Shedding Phase):
The final phase the lash naturally falls out to make room for a new one. It can take 24 months for a full lash to grow back.
Yes, youre constantly shedding and regrowing lashes but since they don't all fall out at once, most of us never notice... until we start wearing extensions.
Extensions Don't Change the Cycle They Just Highlight It
When you wear lash extensions, each one is bonded to a natural lash. So when a natural lash falls out, your extension goes with it. This often causes concern, but its actually just the natural cycle doing its thing.
Even with the best-quality lashes and adhesive, your extensions can only stay as long as your natural lashes do typically around 4 to 6 weeks, depending on your individual cycle.
Think of it like:
Hair bleaching: Roots grow out, and you need a touch-up.
Nails: Even the best manicure wont last longer than the speed of your natural nail growth.
Lashes: No matter how perfect the application, nature takes over.
So, Should You Be Worried About Lash Shedding?
Absolutely not! Its proof that your lashes are healthy and functioning just like they should. The only time to worry is if you're seeing unusual or excessive shedding, which could point to issues like allergies, poor hygiene, or harsh removal methods.
To maintain the best lash look,
regular refills every 2-3 weeks are ideal.
This keeps your lash line full while working with your natural cycle, not against it.
So yes eyelashes fall out and grow back, just like the hair on your head.
It's not a failure of your lash tech or glue. It's simply biology.
Next time you notice a fallen lash, dont panic your body is doing exactly what its supposed to.

While lash extensions offer volume and drama, they're not for everyone. Try it once, and you might never go back to mascara again.
